Sewing Tutorial: Step by Step
1. Sew the Shoulder Seams
- With right sides together, pin the front and back bodice at the shoulder seams.
- Stitch, then finish the seam allowances separately. Press seams open.
2. Insert the Center Back Invisible Zipper
- Use an invisible zipper foot. Open the zipper and press the teeth flat from the wrong side.
- Pin one zipper tape face down on the back opening edge, aligning zipper teeth with seam line.
- Stitch close to teeth from neckline to zipper pull. Repeat on the opposite side.
- Close zipper. Pin and stitch the center back seam below the zipper, slightly overlapping previous stitching.
- Secure the zipper ends to seam allowances with hand stitching or bar tack.
3. Sew the Side Seams
- Pin and sew the right side seam completely.
- On the left side, leave an opening between zipper notches.
- Finish all seam allowances separately and press open.
4. Insert Side Seam Invisible Zipper
- Baste the left side seam between zipper notches and press open.
- Pin closed zipper face down onto seam allowance, aligning notches.
- Baste and stitch each side close to the teeth using the invisible zipper foot.
- Remove the basting and press.
- Secure zipper ends to the seam allowance.
5. Attach the Sleeves
- Sew two rows of long gathering stitches along the sleeve cap between notches.
- Stitch the underarm seams of each sleeve.
- Hem sleeve edge with a narrow 5/8″ double fold.
- Insert sleeves into armholes, right sides together, matching notches.
- Pull gathering threads to ease the cap. Baste and stitch.
- Stitch again 1/4″ inside the seam allowance for strength. Serge or finish seam and press toward the bodice.
6. Finish the Neckline
- Mock Coverstitch Method: Serge neckline edge, turn in and press. Topstitch two rows 1/4″ apart.
- Zigzag Option: Turn and press neckline seam allowance. Stitch with a short-length zigzag along folded edge.
7. Hem the Dress
- Fold and press hem along the foldline.
- Stitch with either a zigzag or double needle from the right side.
- Press for a clean finish.
Final Thoughts
This stretch-knit mini dress pattern is perfect for testing your skills with zippers and sleeves while keeping the silhouette minimal and flattering. The lack of a waist seam and the smooth center back seam give it a refined look, great for both everyday and occasion wear.
