 Step-by-Step Sewing Tutorial

Follow these beginner-friendly instructions to sew your women’s basic blouse from start to finish.

1.Sew the Shoulder Seams

Begin by aligning the front and back blouse pieces with right sides facing each other.

  • Pin and stitch the shoulder seams.
  • Finish each seam allowance separately (serge or zigzag), and press open.
This step creates a clean and flat shoulder line.

2. Join the Side Seams

Next, sew the blouse sides together.

  • On the right side, stitch from underarm to hem.
  • On the left side, stitch only from the armhole to the zipper notch.
  • Finish all seam allowances and press open for a professional finish.

3. Install the Invisible Side Zipper

This blouse uses a side invisible zipper for easy wear.

  • First, baste the remaining left side seam closed and press open.
  • With the zipper closed and face-down, align its teeth on the seam line. Pin and baste in place.
  • Unpick the basting, open the zipper, and use an invisible zipper foot to stitch both sides.
  • Backstitch at the beginning and end of each seam for durability.
  • Once the zipper is installed, stitch the tape end to the seam allowance by hand or machine.

4. Prepare and Attach the Sleeves

Let’s move on to the sleeves.

  • Ease the sleeve cap by sewing two rows of long stitches between the notches.
  • Stitch the underarm seam of each sleeve.
  • Hem the bottom of each sleeve with a ⅝” (1.5 cm) narrow hem: turn in once, press, turn again, and topstitch.
  • Insert the sleeve into the armhole, right sides together. Match notches, align the center notch with the shoulder seam, adjust ease, then stitch.
  • Stitch a second line ¼” inside the seam, then serge or zigzag the edge. Press toward the bodice.

5. Finish the Neckline

You can choose between two clean and beginner-friendly neckline finishes:

Option A: Mock Coverstitch (Machine)

  • Serge the raw edge, then fold under the seam allowance and press.
  • Stitch two rows of straight stitches, ¼” (6mm) apart, for a faux coverstitch look.

Option B: Zigzag Finish (No Serger)

  • Fold under the neckline seam allowance and press.
  • Using a short-length zigzag stitch, sew along the folded edge.

 6.Hem the Blouse

Almost done!

  • Fold the blouse hem up along the indicated foldline.
  • Secure with a zigzag stitch or a twin needle for a stretchy finish.
  • Finally, press the entire hem area to set the stitches and smooth the fabric.

Wrap-Up: You’ve Finished Your Basic Blouse!

Congratulations! You’ve just sewn a versatile, comfy knit blouse that works for almost any occasion. With no darts, no waist seam, and a hidden zipper, this project is a fantastic introduction to working with knit fabrics. As you gain confidence, feel free to personalize your women’s basic blouse sewing pattern by adjusting sleeve lengths, adding a ruffle, or trying new necklines.
